Project Goal

The project focuses on improving visitors' experiences at the Edmond Museum and boosting visitor numbers by encouraging engagement with its activities.

The Design Idea

As a team of four, our mission was to improve the user experience at the museum by enhancing accessibility and introducing ideas to encourage visitors to engage with and revisit the museum. Our design concept involved creating a Pocket Guide accessible via a QR code or URL through a web application.

The UX Research Phase

We conducted user research, starting with the formative research phase to gather essential information and insights as the basis for our design. This phase involved interviewing stakeholders of the Edmonds Museum and conducting field studies to observe their behavior and interactions with each exhibit. Additionally, we utilized the Design and Evaluative Research Phase to define the design direction and create the prototype. Throughout this phase, we conducted heuristic evaluations to gather feedback on the design.

Formative Research Phase

The formative research for the Edmonds Museum Pocket Guide (Web Application) employed the PACT framework, focusing on People, Activities, Context, and Technologies to maintain a user-centric design approach. My role involved observing museum visitors and collecting data on their demographics, activities, and exhibit interactions. This aimed to grasp visitor expectations and assess satisfaction with the museum experience.

Affinity Diagram

We organized collected data into categories based on their relationships and common themes to generate insights and drive actions toward specific pain points.

Research Findings/ Pain Points

  • Lack of visitor accessibility options to the museum exhibits

  • Hard to navigate through the museum exhibits

  • No chance for the visitors to engage with the museum and provide feedback.

Photo persona

I created a user persona that reflects the demographic of the museum's visitors, their frustration points, and what they need.

Design and Evaluative Research Phase

This phase involves heuristic evaluations, ongoing feedback collection, and iterative processes to create a user-centric solution aligning with the museum's goals and stakeholder needs. My role focused on enhancing visitor engagement by designing a seamless process for providing exhibit feedback and sharing photos in the museum's gallery. I also implemented instant feedback mechanisms to inform visitors promptly about the status of their submissions.

Heuristic Evaluation

The Usability Heuristics evaluation was based on Nielsen Norman Group’s 10 Usability Heuristics.

  • The feedback showed the need to improve the feedback screens to give visitors more flexibility.

Incorporating Heuristic Evaluation Feedback

Considering the heuristic evaluation feedback, I adjusted the design to enhance flexibility, enabling visitors to provide input swiftly and effortlessly. One notable addition is the implementation of instant feedback in a pop-up message that appears when visitors tap the share button on the feedback screen.

Design Details

In response to user needs and insights gleaned from evaluations, the feedback screen design allows users to select their preferred method of providing feedback through ratings or text input. The primary objective of this design is to empower users with control and freedom to articulate their feedback as they see fit.

Next Steps

  • Conduct usability testing for the newly added features.

  • Iterate on the prototype based on feedback and testing results.

  • Include an authentic photograph showcasing the museum rooms.

Reflection

Engaging with stakeholders and understanding their requests and desired changes for the museum proved instrumental in defining the design scope and direction.

Performing heuristic evaluation yielded valuable feedback from the users' perspective, contributing to enhancements in the prototype design.

Collaborating within a team environment facilitates the exchange of ideas and enhances the design plan.
